Home Care After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

After the extraction of wisdom teeth, the dentist will give you a gauze to bite on to apply pressure to the oozing socket from further bleeding. Gauze need to changed around every 30 minutes until the gauze is in light pink color indicating bleeding has stopped.

To reduce swelling, keep ice on the face for 30 minutes alternating from side to side. Try to remain upright as to not increase swelling. If need to sleep, recliner or higher pile pillows to elevate the head.

Do not smoke or consume alcohol for the first seven days after surgery as it is main cause of dry socket complications; which the absence of blood clot at the surgical area that form a foundation for new tissue building and faster healing. Without the blood clog, the nerve or bone might be exposed and delay healing. It usually occur 3 to 4 days after the surgery, and it could be a very painful condition, consult your dentist for treatment.

Do not rinse and split vigorously on the first 24 hours of surgery.

Keep finger and tongue away from the surgical socket.

Do not use straw for drinking and any carbonated drinks for one week.

Avoid hot and spicy food on the first 48 hours. Eat soft, cool and non-sticky food like pudding, ice cream, mash potato, yogurt and others similar type of foods.

Rinse your mouth may be started on second day with 1/4 teaspoon of salt in an eight ounce of glass of warm water. Rinse five to six times daily for the first week.

Continue alternating ice on the face for first 36 hours. This does not need to be done when sleeping. The worst swelling is at 48 hours.

Rest, no vigorous physical exercise like jogging, weight lifting, hard manual labor for first 4 days.

Soft diet should be continued, but warm foods are okay to eat on second day. After second day, patient may eat anything that is tolerable.

Most sutures (surgical join, if stitches applied) are resorbable and begin to dissolve within 5 to 10 days.
