For those who has a Motorola Droid smartphone from Verizon Wireless, you probably has already seen the update notification. The new software update version AP: ESE81/BP: C_01.3E.03P update includes numerous enhancement and improvements. The system update mainly update from Android 2.0 to Android 2.1. Google Android 2.1 was released in January 2010 and finally Motorola finished its own system update and deploy to Droid today, April 2 2010. Here are the enhancements and improvements in the new update, pretty much similar to Android 2.1 features introduced on Google Phone, Nexus One.
Enhancements
- Pinch to zoom for browser, gallery, and Google Map. (I really like this feature on web, that was the reason i installed the Dolphin Browser)
- New weather and news application plus widget. (Love it! I could uninstall my previous weather widget. The news function is what I have been longing for. Good job!)
- Voice to text for all text-entry box. (It can even transcribe my voice with accent into proper word, thumb up!)
- New gallery with 3D layout. (Like it, easy to navigate)
- Live Wallpaper with richer animated and interactive background. Access with long press on the home screen. (Good to show off a little :D )
Improvements
- Free Yahoo! Mail is now supported (I integrate all my other email address to Gmail, so this is not as useful for me)
- Google Maps Update. Personalized suggestion and synchronized starring with desktop maps.google.com. New night mode.
- Improved pattern lock functionality.
- Improved handset audio when disconnecting.
Note: If you clicked 'Install Later' or 'More Info', and want to manually install the update, you could manually initiate it by going to Home > Menu > Setting > About Phone > System Update > Restart & Install
