Disingenuous - Someone who is disingenuous is slightly dishonest and insincere in what they say.
I am an international pilot for a major US carrier. Several years ago, my aircraft was diverted to Hartford due to weather and fuel considerations. We were on the ground for over 2 hours and it was entirely due to US Customs. We had our fuel, a new release to our destination, and cooperating weather. We were ready to go after being on the ground for no more than 1 hour. We were not permitted to leave Hartford until we had received permission from customs. We had to wait on the aircraft since there were no facilities that could handle international passengers and it was at least another hour or more before we could leave. I might add that we were in the air only minutes before our FAA mandated crew rest limitations would have precluded our departure. No telling how long those passengers would have been stranded if that had occurred. When my wife mentioned this story to me the other day, I knew exactly whose responsibility it was that these people were inconvenienced, US Customs. Secretary Lahood's statement about how this "reinforce(s)(his) belief that passengers have rights" can lead one to believe that this was Virgin Atlantic' fault. I can almost assuredly say this is not the case and LaHood's is disingenuous and he knows it.
