Gmail New Preview Pane

If you use Gmail, you might be interested in this blog. Google recently aggressively revamping their design across all its products, including Gmail. Google is trying to standardize the look of its product across different devices, like similar look on desktop, laptop, tablet and smart phone. A few weeks ago Google introduced new look of Gmail. You could change your Gmail look now from the two options available in themes, called Preview, or Preview (Dense). I personally prefer Preview (Dense) better cause it is more compact with more email listings.

Here is a snapshot comparison between old Gmail look and new Gmail look, from goodmorninggeek website. Click the image to see it more clearly.

Alright, this is what have happen in the past few weeks. Lets talk about what happen today. Google announce another new feature for the new Preview / Preview (Dense) look, called Preview Pane. This Preview Pane look very similar with the Gmail tablet interface (For those who use iPad or Android tablet will notice). This again prove that Google is working toward common interface of its product on different devices.

To enable the Preview Pane, go to the Gmail Settings, look for Preview Pane and click the enable toggle button, and save changes. Now, you could switch the between preview and list views on the toggle button on the top right corner of the message list.

You are pretty much done. But that is one more IMPORTANT option you may want to consider. In this preview pane, when you click on the email / conversation, by default there is 3 second delay to mark the email as read, or you could double click on the email / conversation to make it read. I was frown on this unnecessary delay. But then realize there is a setting I could change for this delay to immediately. The timing could be changed in the general tab of settings.

Now I am happy with this new feature!  :-)
